EDPS is pleased to recognise Latisha Besariani Hendra, a Computer Science student at City University of Hong Kong, as one of the joint highest-scoring awardees of the EDPS Innovation Scholarship 2025/26. Her project, TARS: A Low-Latency Proactive Cognitive Framework for Embodied Assistants, explores a new way for people to interact with voice-enabled AI. Most voice assistants wait for a wake word or direct command. TARS instead monitors speech for signs of hesitation or confusion and can offer assistance without waiting to be asked. At the centre of the project is CASE, the Cognitive Assistance and Situational Engine, deployed on a desktop robot built for under US$200. The system looks for cues including extended silence, hesitation words and direct expressions such as “I’m stuck”. A large language model evaluates the context, while a separate deterministic gate helps prevent unnecessary interruptions when users are thinking aloud. The architecture combines a Raspberry Pi 5 hardware node with a separate AI processing host. To create a more natural interaction, Latisha optimised the system for rapid speech recognition, AI reasoning and voice generation. The reported evaluation achieved median processing latency of 703 to 808 milliseconds and end-to-end latency of 961 to 1,302 milliseconds. In tests involving eight participants, 61% of the proactive interventions were judged appropriately timed. The study also identified important risks. The language model occasionally repeated users’ words without adding useful information, exposed internal reasoning in spoken responses or produced answers that were too long for the situation. These findings suggest that proactive assistants should combine generative AI with clear, rule-based safeguards rather than relying on prompts alone. Latisha has released both the CASE software and TARS hardware platform as open-source projects. This allows other researchers, educators and developers to examine the design and build upon its findings. The project demonstrates the potential of proactive embodied AI to support learning, accessibility and everyday tasks. Just as importantly, it recognises the need to balance timely assistance with user autonomy, privacy and responsible system behaviour. Through TARS, Latisha presents an engaging vision of AI that does not simply wait for instructions, but can recognise when thoughtful assistance may be helpful.

EDPS is pleased to recognise Youkang Wang, a final-year BSc (Honours) Computer Science student at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as one of the joint highest-scoring awardees of the EDPS Innovation Scholarship 2025/26. His project, Efficient Large Language Model Inference-time Scaling and Training, addresses a growing challenge in artificial intelligence: advanced large language models can improve their answers by generating and evaluating more responses, but this requires substantial computing resources, energy and cost. Youkang developed three complementary frameworks—OptScale, MarkovScale and OptPO—to help AI models determine how much computation is genuinely needed. Instead of relying on fixed budgets or trial-and-error rules, the frameworks apply probability theory, Markov-chain analysis and Bayesian sequential testing to decide when a model should continue reasoning and when it should stop. OptScale focuses on situations in which a model generates multiple answers and selects the best one. It estimates the number of samples required to reach a target level of confidence, reducing unnecessary generation. On the DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B model, OptScale reduced token consumption by up to 56% while matching or exceeding the accuracy of established approaches. MarkovScale examines multi-step reasoning and estimates whether another round of refinement is likely to improve or weaken an answer. OptPO applies a Bayesian stopping method to test-time policy optimisation, ending the generation of training rollouts once there is sufficient evidence to support a leading answer. Across the reported benchmarks, OptPO achieved token savings of 30% to 50% while maintaining reasoning accuracy. The project has produced three first-author research papers. OptScale was published at the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence in 2026, while MarkovScale and OptPO were submitted to NeurIPS 2026, according to the scholarship proposal. By reducing unnecessary token usage, Youkang’s research could lower the cost and environmental impact of advanced AI. It may also make high-performance reasoning tools more accessible to universities, startups, public-sector organisations and smaller enterprises. His work reflects the purpose of the EDPS Innovation Scholarship: recognising rigorous technical research that can create meaningful academic, commercial and societal value.

EDPS is pleased to recognise Felix Lau Pangestu, a final-year Computer Science student at Hong Kong Baptist University, as one of the joint highest-scoring awardees of the EDPS Innovation Scholarship 2025/26. Felix’s project, Few-Shot Transfer Learning for Building Energy Forecasting Using LSTM Neural Networks, addresses a practical sustainability challenge. Newly commissioned, renovated or recently instrumented buildings often have only a limited amount of reliable energy data. This makes it difficult to train accurate deep-learning models for energy forecasting. His research explores whether transfer learning can overcome this limitation. Rather than building every forecasting model from the beginning, transfer learning allows a model to reuse knowledge gained from buildings with richer historical data. Felix compared four approaches: training from scratch, fully fine-tuning a pre-trained model, freezing the model’s main backbone, and adding compact adapter layers. The project evaluated these methods across different building types and data periods. For well-matched education buildings, transfer learning reduced forecasting error by up to 29% when eight weeks of target-building data were available. In another case, it delivered a 67.5% improvement with only one week of data. However, the research also found that full fine-tuning could perform poorly when the source and target buildings had very different energy-use patterns. This discovery became an important part of the project. Felix found that freezing the model’s backbone provided a more reliable option for difficult targets. He also proposed an automated switching rule that compares scratch and transfer models using validation data before selecting the stronger approach. In the experiments, this rule achieved 99.9% of the performance of an ideal selection made with hindsight. The project stands out because it examines not only when AI performs well, but also when and why it may fail. Its findings could help building owners, facilities managers and smart-building technology providers introduce energy forecasting earlier, without waiting years to collect sufficient data. Through this project, Felix demonstrates how practical and carefully tested AI can support smarter building operations, improved energy efficiency and a more sustainable built environment.

Candidates may directly send their job applications or utilise IT Recruitment Solutions through agencies. Whether it’s the hiring manager or an IT Recruitment Agency reviewing your application, understanding how to tailor your application for IT positions is essential. Understanding What Employers Are Looking ForTo tailor your CV for IT Staff Recruitment, grasp the qualities the IT sector seeks for different roles:

Technical Skills: Includes skills relevant to the job, such as network infrastructure, office automation applications, system maintenance, and operational management.

Relevant Experience: Highlight experiences corresponding to the job descriptions, emphasizing IT operational tasks, support for applications, and project management initiatives linked to the IT roles.

Adaptability and Problem-Solving: Demonstrate your ability to adapt to evolving technologies and meet specific project demands required in the context, particularly in high-demand positions like Project Manager and Senior Systems Analyst.

Soft Skills: Highlight effective communication, teamwork, and attention to detail, all vital in a private or public sector service environment. Tailor this focus based on job specifics.

Continuous Learning: Emphasize your dedication to professional development through relevant certifications, training, and experiences aligned with targeted roles.

Professional SummaryStart your CV with a targeted professional summary that succinctly outlines your IT expertise and career aspirations. This section should highlight your fit for the IT position you are aiming for, focusing on skills related to the job, such as network infrastructure, office automation, system implementation, and project management. Include positions you’ve held that are relevant to the job, such as Project Manager, Infrastructure Engineer, and Information Technology Technician. Ensure this summary emphasizes how your experience and qualifications align directly with the job requirements. Matching Your ExperienceGiven the variety of job types and position categories in the IT sector—including project management, systems maintenance, operational support, and service management, and positions such as Project Manager, Systems Analyst, Analyst Programmer, and Information Technology Assistant—candidates must emphasize relevant experiences that correspond to specific job descriptions provided in advertisements. Recruiters often assess how well candidates' qualifications fit with job requirements to ensure the selection of suitable candidates for each position, whether for public sector or private sector, direct employment or secondment contract positions. For instance:

If applying for a role involving the Wi-Fi Connected Programme, highlight experience in project activities related to Wi-Fi service research, system enhancement, and operational support, including managing websites, mobile apps, and chatbots. Align these skills with the job descriptions for the positions you’re applying to, utilizing keywords that match the requirements for ATS (Applicant Tracking System) compatibility. Consider including skills such as:

Network Infrastructure Management

Cloud Computing (AWS, Azure)

Project Management Tools (Jira, Trello)

Database Management (SQL)

Cybersecurity Protocols

Systems Analysis and Design

Application Development (Java, Python, C#)

IT Support and Troubleshooting

DevOps Methodologies

Ensure that your skills directly reflect the requirements listed in the job posting to maximize relevance. Achievements and Project ExperienceInclude a dedicated section for notable achievements or projects that underscore your capabilities in the IT domain. Focus on projects and experiences that align with the job you are applying for, and quantify your accomplishments to illustrate their significance. If you are applying for a government position, quantify your T-Con experience or Information Systems Audit and IT security experience relevant to financial sector applications. Soft SkillsWhile technical skills are essential, it’s important to emphasize soft skills such as teamwork, effective communication, and project management. Adapt your focus based on the specific job requirements. Your CV should clearly reflect these adaptable skills, ensuring they align with the expectations outlined in job descriptions. By closely aligning your CV with the requirements listed in the job descriptions and highlighting relevant experiences, you can significantly enhance your chances of securing a direct recruitment, secondment role, or contract IT position.
